About MITIE - Advancing the Practice of Medicine

Mission Statement:

Dr. Barbara Bass

MITIESM will be an educational resource for health care professionals seeking to maintain excellent clinical skills and acquire new ones. It will improve patient safety through these educational pursuits and conduct research on skills acquisition and technological development.

History:

MITIE was born from the vision of its Executive Director, Dr. Barbara Lee Bass. Dr. Bass was recruited to chair the Department of Surgery at Methodist Hospital in 2005. As a former Chair of the Board of Governors for the American College of Surgeons and three term member of the Board of Regents and Chair of the American Board of Surgery, she has been instrumental in shaping the educational processes for surgeons in the United States. Her position, as the inaugural John F. and Carolyn Bookout Distinguished Endowed Chair of the Department of Surgery at The Methodist Hospital afforded her the opportunity to create a model comprehensive education institute focused on procedural learners where physicians in practice could come and "retool" to maintain their skills and acquire new ones. She shared her vision with the leaders of the Methodist Hospital who embraced it wholeheartedly and agreed to provide the space, finances, and support for the Institute. In 2007 Dr. Bass recruited Dr. Brian Dunkin, a leader in surgical education and simulation, to help her and The Methodist Hospital convert concept into reality.

General Description:

MITIE is located in the new Methodist Hospital Research Institute building of the Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas, making it part of one of the nation's best hospitals and positioning it well within the heart of the Texas Medical Center (TMC) - the largest medical center in the world.

The Methodist Hospital and MITIE encourage you to explore our Web site and learn more about the activities in MITIE. The Institute strives to serve as a "home base" for local, regional, national, and international physicians who are looking to develop a personal relationship with an education provider who understands and addresses their unique needs.
